Online Dental Assistant Programs Duties

Dental assistants are a major contributor to the healthcare team in any dental facility. They perform office duties such as scheduling appointments, receiving patients, obtaining medical histories, and creating patient dental files. Some dental assistants may even create billing documents and collect payments. Dental assistants are important for the direct care of the patients. They work closely with the dentist by sterilizing and organizing utensils and equipment for use during procedures. One of their main duties is to ensure patient comfort while in the dental chair. They may be required to use a suction machine to keep the patient’s mouth clean and dry during dental procedures.

Some states require certification in order for dental assistants to perform laboratory duties such as taking x rays and removing sutures. To gain the education needed to perform these duties, some dental assistants enroll in online dental assistant programs.

What to expect from online dental assistant programs

Online dental assistant programs offer the same coursework that students can find at local community colleges or technical schools. The subjects offered are dental terminology, dental anatomy and physiology, preventative dentistry, clinical support, dental assisting theory, and applied dental science. The difference between online programs and those offered at community colleges is flexibility. Students who pursue their degree on line can take their classes anytime within their own home. Whereas, students who attend community colleges have to travel to the campus and take the classes during the times that they are offered.

Online Dental Assistant Programs Training

Online dental assistant programs also provide the training and education necessary for dental assistants through virtual classroom instruction, laboratory instruction, and clinical instruction. Most dental assistant schools require a commitment of one to two years depending on the level the students want to obtain. If the dental assistant is simply looking to become certified, they can expect to invest about one year of their time. However, if they want to become a registered dental assistant with greater responsibilities, they may benefit more from an Associate’s degree program that takes up to two years.  Completing online dental assistant programs will be a very wise career decision.
